News from your DPVA Board – April 2020

At times it might feel as though much of the work of the DPVA has come to a halt. No live Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra performances. No in-school Orchestra and You presentations. No Young People’s concerts. No Magic Carpet Rides for students at the Masonic Center. No Q the Music performances. But work continues behind the scenes in anticipation of the time when we can all feel like we’re on the road to being back to normal.

• The scholarship committee is in the process of selecting recipients of the Clark Haines Scholarship as well as other smaller money awards.
• Auditions for DPYO are being conducted virtually. The orchestra conductors are currently reviewing audition submissions.
• The annual concerto competition has been rescheduled for June 27. It will be held in Mathile Theater.
• DPVA’s annual meeting will still be held June 9. As we have all become accustomed to, it will likely be held as a video conference.
• Dates have been set for volunteer seminars for 2020-2021. Mark your calendars now for the Volunteer Fair on Sept. 9, and student concert preview seminars with Patrick Reynolds on Sept. 16 and Neal Gittleman on Jan. 13. Location for the seminars is yet to be determined.
• Concert Night with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra airs on Saturday evenings at 8 pm on Discover Classical 88.1FM WDPR Dayton/ 89.9FM WDPG Greenville/ 89.1FM WUSO Springfield, and online at discoverclassical.org. This Saturday’s broadcast ( from February 2017) at 8:00 pm will include:
  – Bach-Schoenberg: St. Anne Prelude and Fugue
  – Bach: Motet #1, Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Dayton Philharmonic Chamber Choir)
  – Mahler: Symphony No. 5

Even though the current need for doing business at a safe distance seems like it might have no end, it will. And the DPVA will be ready to get back to the active business of supporting the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and serving the musical needs of students of the Miami Valley.
