For Immediate Release:
DESIGNERS’ SHOW HOUSE & GARDENS 2007 FEATURES LATEST DESIGNS INSIDE AND OUT
35 Interior Designers and 9 Landscapers Update House & Gardens for New Homeowners
Dayton, Ohio (April 16, 2007). The Patterson-Hauer Estate in Kettering is the site of the Designers’ Show House & Gardens 2007, the major Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association (DPVA) fundraiser supporting the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra as well as music education and scholarship programs for youth in the Miami Valley.
Nancy King, co-chair of the event, said “We are especially pleased to feature an historic home once again in the City of Kettering. Our 2007 Show House offers each visitor a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to tour this estate, updated for a family of today, while retaining all of its architectural charm. Many of our designers picked up on our “Sounds of Music” theme.”
Philip and Jane Sheridan, Dayton residents, purchased the home recently and are thrilled to be a part of the Designers’ Show House & Gardens project. The Sheridan’s are excited with the kitchen renovation and new color scheme. Sharon Bledsoe, of Pleasant Hill, designer of the dining room, remarks about her space, “The dining room is defined by its soaring windows; framing a view of the gardens. The shine and sparkle of glass and silver accents set off a classic black and white tile floor.”
Designers’ plans include a totally remodeled kitchen by Vicki Waker of Cabinet Creations Design Gallery featuring a kitchen island by Thomasville Furniture. Judy Kurtz, of Thomasville of Dayton, ordered the island with a new kitchen easy-access floor plan in mind. Bathrooms are also being updated with new ceramic floors and fixtures. A new tile floor will show off the spacious front porch at the entry. Landscapers will enhance their gardens with new plantings and ingenious shapes. The former picnic grove will be transformed into a “guitar-shaped garden” by David Swearingen of The Site Group.
Philharmonic patron and Dayton business leader, Jerry Hauer, owned the estate from 1967 until March 2007. The Hauers raised six children in this wonderful family homestead. Their piano, a Knabe jewel, was previously owned by the Patterson family. Hauer Music Company, Jerry Hauer, owner, was recognized as Music Friend of the Year by the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association for long-term support of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.
“Willow Grove” the beautiful Adirondack style home in Kettering, sits on land originally owned by John H. Patterson, the founder of NCR. The Swiss Chalet style, inspired by William West Durrant’s Adirondack style camps in upstate New York, was very popular with John Patterson and his contemporaries. Patterson took groups of friends for summer fishing, riding and boating parties. The stables, the picnic grove and the terraced overlook are elements of Adirondack style. Instead of a lake, there was a magnificent swimming pool for water sports and quiet reflection. Benjamin Ziehler, prolific inventor and founder of Consumers Oil Co., later Producers Oil Co., was another long time owner of the property.
Penny Wolf, co-chair of the event, said “This project marks nearly 30 years of Show Houses presented by the DPVA in collaboration with regional interior and landscape designers. Everyone loves to see how our designers transform every area of the Show House and Gardens into fresh, livable areas.”
