ANNUAL JUNIOR HIGH SOLO COMPETITION

7-8-9 SOLO COMPETITION

Students of orchestra instruments in grades 7, 8 and 9 are invited to participate in the annual 7-8-9 Solo Competition sponsored by the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association. The competition will be held Saturday morning, April 26, 2008 at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Road in Kettering, Ohio. Participants will be assigned a performance time between 9AM and 12noon.


The following categories for competition are offered: strings (including harp), woodwinds, brass and percussion. Within each category, students will be judged only against other players of the same grade level. For example, 7th grade string players will compete only against other 7th grade string players. Within each grade level for each of the four instrument groups – strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion – awards will be given as follows:

First Place $125
Second Place $75
Third Place Honorable Mention – Certificate


In addition, all winners will receive a voucher for two complimentary tickets to one of the 2008/2009 Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Classical Series performances.


Performance Requirements

1. Play one number that shows both tone and technique. The piece must be memorized and must not exceed five minutes in length.

2. Bring a copy of the solo part with the measures numbered for the judges.

3. Provide an accompanist if needed. If the accompanist plays for more than one student, this fact must be noted at the bottom of the application for scheduling purposes.

4. 7th and 8th grade students will be asked to play one-octave scale; 9th grade students will be asked to play two-octave scales.


Application Procedure

Use the enclosed Application Form, which may be copied as needed or download from our website www.dpva.org. Enclose TWO #10 (business/letter )stamped, self-addressed envelopes with each application. There is a $5.00 application fee. Make checks out to DPVA. Applications must be received by March 22, 2008. Mail to:
